Insulated thermos rail car, model 16-1807-04

In the early 2011 the project Developers carried out an analysis of market situation concerning carriage of perishable cargo by rail and made a conclusion of future prospects of development works in the area of innovative power supply rail cars and development of car models for such purposes.

Research and development works on design of new rail cars with improved technical features were carried out involving a contractor “MGSKBV” LLC (“Moscow Lead Specialized Engineering Department of Railcar Manufacturing” LLC).

Development of innovative systems for self-contained power supply of cars was carried out using own resources and also involving subcontractors of design engineering departments of Russian factories.

Resulting from the joint activities, series of innovative decisions and modern railcars have been formed, as follows:

- Insulated thermos car, model 16-1807-04 for carriage of goods with extended delivery deadline,

-  All-purpose car-platform, model 13-9565 with self-contained power supply system for carriage of refrigerated containers and other goods,

-  Refrigerated car, model 16-1817-01 for carriage of perishable cargo at a temperature comprised between -20 to +16 degree Celsius using oversize dimensions of frozen room and increased lift capacity,

-  Refrigerated car, model 16-1817 with self-contained power supply system for carriage of perishable cargo at a temperature comprised between -20 to +16 degree Celsius using zoning of indoor temperature requirements, oversize dimensions of frozen room and increased lift capacity.

These models are meant to be used for carriage of perishable goods that require environment protection, that thermally-prepared before loading (frozen, chilled, or warm), with expire date no more than 10 days and that do not evolve biology heat, and also for carriage of  nonperishable food and nonfood unit-load goods.

Thermos rail car must be manufactured in “NF” (moderately cold climate) mode for the first placement category following GOST 15150 and service reliability in the temperature range   from minus 60 °С to plus 50 °С

Competitive advantages:

Cargo base of PER

The average annual volume of perishable cargo (PER) traffic is within the range of 86,0 million tons.

The structure of middle- and long-distance PER traffic by multimodal transport is the following:

For the railway company the target segment is long-distances PER traffic and the competitive segment is traffic at the distances from 1 500 to 3 000 km.

In the eyes of Russia Ministry of Transportation, the potential PER traffic volume for railway transport is:

Competitive advantages:

- Goods’ delivery date with temperature condition conservation is to 10 full days against 6 full days at the similar rail car.

- The rail cars are equipped with temperature-monitoring devices and GPRS system that allows control the shipping temperature of goods in the real time mode, and also temperature condition during goods transportation.  The temperature data can be sent to the cargo owner by SMS message or into operator’s computer.

- Heat-transfer coefficient of cars insulation is 0,25 W/(m2*К) against 0,40-0,50 W/(m2*К) of current insulated and refrigerated cars feet.

- At the request of the operator the rail cars can be equipped with removable slurry ice generators. Use of such kind of refrigerated rail cars in assembly with fast refrigerated trains allows take over the traffic of premium class sea foods instead of the air carriers because of lower price cost.

-Statutory service life of rail car is 25 years.

Certification termination: August, 2019

Production volume (estimated) August – December, 2019 to 60 rail cars every month

Production volume (estimated) 2020 – 2025, ≥ 200 rail cars every month
