In the early 2011 the project Developers carried out an analysis of market situation concerning carriage of perishable cargo by rail and made a conclusion of future prospects of development works in the area of innovative power supply rail cars and development of car models for such purposes.
Research and development works on design of new rail cars with improved technical features were carried out involving a contractor “MGSKBV” LLC (“Moscow Lead Specialized Engineering Department of Railcar Manufacturing” LLC).
Development of innovative systems for self-contained power supply of cars was carried out using own resources and also involving subcontractors of design engineering departments of Russian factories.
Resulting from the joint activities, series of innovative decisions and modern railcars have been formed, as follows:
- Insulated thermos car, model 16-1807-04 for carriage of goods with extended delivery deadline,
- All-purpose car-platform, model 13-9565 with self-contained power supply system for carriage of refrigerated containers and other goods,
- Refrigerated car, model 16-1817-01 for carriage of perishable cargo at a temperature comprised between -20 to +16 degree Celsius using oversize dimensions of frozen room and increased lift capacity,
- Refrigerated car, model 16-1817 with self-contained power supply system for carriage of perishable cargo at a temperature comprised between -20 to +16 degree Celsius using zoning of indoor temperature requirements, oversize dimensions of frozen room and increased lift capacity.
These models are meant to be used for carriage of perishable goods that require environment protection, that thermally-prepared before loading (frozen, chilled, or warm), with expire date no more than 10 days and that do not evolve biology heat, and also for carriage of nonperishable food and nonfood unit-load goods.
Thermos rail car must be manufactured in “NF” (moderately cold climate) mode for the first placement category following GOST 15150 and service reliability in the temperature range from minus 60 °С to plus 50 °С
Competitive advantages:
- Goods’ delivery date with temperature condition conservation is to 10 full days against 6 full days at the similar rail cars.
- The rail cars are equipped with temperature-monitoring devices and GPRS system that allows control the shipping temperature of goods in the real time mode, and also temperature condition during goods transportation.
- The temperature data can be sent to the cargo owner by SMS message or into operator’s computer.
- Heat-transfer coefficient of cars insulation is 0,25 W/(m2К) against 0,40-0,50 W/(m2К) of current insulated and refrigerated cars feet.
- At the request of the operator the rail cars can be equipped with removable slurry ice generators. Use of such kind of refrigerated rail cars in assembly with fast refrigerated trains allows take over the traffic of premium class sea foods instead of the air carriers because of lower price cost.
- Statutory service life of rail car is 25 years.
Cargo base of PER
The average annual volume of perishable cargo (PER) traffic is within the range of 86,0 million tons.
- The share of city and local transport services is 54% of the total volume. It is equal to 46,44 million tons,
- The share of middle- and long-distance transport services is 46% of the total volume. It is equal to 39,56 million tons.
The structure of middle- and long-distance PER traffic by multimodal transport is the following:
- Middle distances from 600 to 1 500 km 20,0 million tons
- Transition range from 1 500 to 3 000 km 10,0 million tons
- Long distances from 3 000 to 10 000 km 9,56 million tons
For the railway company the target segment is long-distances PER traffic and the competitive segment is traffic at the distances from 1 500 to 3 000 km.
In the eyes of Russia Ministry of Transportation, the potential PER traffic volume for railway transport is:
- Long distances - 8,0 million tons
- Transition range 3.0 million tons
General technical condition of rail cars for perishable cargo transportation
- Orientation of manufacturing plants to production of all-purpose freight cars has led to the fact that today none of CIS manufacturers are able to introduce to the market a successful system of cars power supply and new models of cars that can protect the customer appeal of food products by low maintenance.
- The share of traffic handling costs that can be optimized using alternative technologies of power production for rail cars is up to 15%,
and taking into account the operating costs for cars – diesel – generators maintenance – 44%. - As of today the wear of refrigerated and insulated feet of cars and cars – diesel – generators of “Russian Railways” OJSC is at least 90%.
- By 2020 it is expected the complete retirement of refrigerated and insulated feet of cars, cars – diesel – generators (cutting for scrap), the mass termination of acting operators in perishable goods carriage sector because of the absence of cars feet specializing in temperature goods carriage.
- In 2021 there will not be a single operator who can provide services for perishable cargo transportation by railway.
- Technologies of perishable goods carriage in KRK are focused on mass traffic and fixed directions.
